One of my favourite things about having this blog and Tums 2 Tots, is the amazing talent I come across while doing it. I have a thing about handmade items, as many of you will know; and this amazing small business owner that found me through Tums 2 Tots uses her talent to hand make the MOST adorable goods for kids! Meet Farayi Chikwete of 3rd Kid Creations!
Farayi is a mom of 3 who works from her home in Plumstead, Cape Town. In 2013, her eldest daughter started Grade R and needed a raincoat. When she couldn’t find anything suitable, she decided to make one herself. The rain ponchos were a hit, because they are easy to wear, roomy, durable and had cute hand-painted pictures; and orders began “pouring” in (get it, rain ponchos, pouring – heehee, I kill me with the funnies).
From stay at home mom, to entrepreneur, Farayi soon added art aprons, chef aprons and hats, and other custom requests, to her offering at 3rd Kid Creations. “It was a challenge running my business and running my home, but I knew I was tough and I just loved designing and making the products…”
Challenges were nothing new to Farayi as she was featured in Your Family magazine in 2014 about moms going back to school. Her daughters were 2 and 4 and she had been studying for her Honours degree full time when she fell pregnant with her third!
I love that Farayi tailors her products for her clients, no matter how big or small the order. From gorgeous themed chef aprons and hats for a special cooking birthday party to a completely uniquely designed rain poncho made for one special little person who loves South African flags – Farayi makes every order fun and personal.
“I take the time to listen to their story and help them choose the best colours or fabrics. It’s great when a mum calls for an apron for their child and we design it together according to their little ones likes; it makes it super special and unique.”
Small orders take 1-2 working days to complete, but Farayi prides herself on being able to deliver on last minute orders as well. 3rd Kid Creations has also begun catering for customers like cooking schools or hotels, and promotional events; adding adult aprons and hats due to popular demand. You can even get matching sets for mom / dad and little human/s! (Father’s Day gift sorted!) And guys, LOOK at the baby sets!!!
Farayi made Charly a gorgeous kiddies chef set (valued at R170) so that I could review her quality and workmanship. I can’t tell you whether Charly or I were more excited about the beautiful blue outfit that arrived. She insisted on putting it on immediately, and refused to take it off most of the day. And of course she couldn’t wait for daddy to come home, so she could cook with him for real – because before this outfit it wasn’t “proper” cooking.
I am so excited to share that 3rd Kid Creations is giving away a gorgeous kiddies chef set to one lucky Pregnant in Cape Town winner!
