The Book Owl Review {Giveaway Closed}

A short while ago I heard about an amazing kiddies book service called The Book Owl from the amazing Cassey (whose name you might recognise from here). We share a love for books and reading and a plan for passing on that love to our kids; which seems to be working really well so far πŸ™‚

I suffer from a chronic case of FOMO (fear of missing out), so I went onto the website to have a look and I fell in love! How gorgeous is this site? The Book Owl front page

I immediately contacted owner Kirsten du Toit with regards to doing a review and giveaway with her, which she happily agreed to. I was SO excited to introduce Kirsten and The Book Owl so that more of you could learn about her incredible offering and get your kids to love books as much as Charly and I do!

Kirsten is mommy to the adorable Josh and Mila, who, like all other little people, loved having stories read to them… too often the same stories over and over… This inspired Kirsten to create The Book Owl; a monthly subscription book service where you can choose a 1, 3 or 6 month package and receive two brand new high quality story picture books and one activity book delivered to your home for any child up to the age of 6.

The concept is so simple – somebody who loves books (Kirsten) does lots of research on the very best age-appropriate children’s books, you tell her all about your kid and what they love, choose the package that works for you and voila – three books selected just for your little person delivered to your door every month.

The books

And the site is incredibly easy to navigate and place your order on. You select your package and your preferences and then you get to add any personal notes on your child. The billing and delivery information sheet is simple and quick to complete and you can choose to make a secure payment from the platform or receive an invoice with their banking details so you can do an EFT. There is no debit order or ongoing payment; you pay a single amount and your books just keep coming for as long as you have chosen. The Book Owl page 2

Under the notes, I added that Charly has a lot of Julia Donaldson books, that she enjoys colouring in and loves her animals, particularly dogs and cats. I received a mail shortly after with a selection of Julia Donaldson books to see which she did not have, so we could keep growing our collection.

We got Cave Baby from Julia Donaldson, which has a great rhyming rhythmic story and beautiful illustrations; and Charly loves it because it is about a baby who draws on walls πŸ™‚

Cave baby

Our second book was the beautiful Matilda’s Cat by Emily Gravett which Charly had to sit and read thoroughly before we could even look at the last book.

We also received a brightly coloured activity book with lovely thick pages and 2 pages of stickers for Charly to indulge her artistic streak.

Activity book

Only a day later I received an unexpected package, when after seeing Charly surrounded by her endless toy dogs on our Instagram feed; Kirsten couldn’t resist adding Emily Gravett’s “Dogs”.

Unwrapping dogs

Charly LOVES her books; especially the very special Dogs. I am signing up this week for the 6 month subscription so that the excitement of receiving new books every few weeks will mean I get to read something other than these three books 100 times a day!! Well played Kirsten πŸ˜‰

Other things I love
Personal touches – The package arrived with a special letter to Charly from the Book Owl, telling her all about the books in her package. My child adores owls and walked around proudly with her letter and the box saying “for Charwy” for ages before I could even draw her attention to the beautifully individually hand wrapped books.

Yay book owl box

The letter

I love that I get to choose whether to give her all the books at once (which I did this time around) or give them one at a time over the month (which I think I will do next time). And there are no words for the look on my child’s face as she opened those “presents” and saw her new books.

I love that we could let them know which books we already have, as we have quite a substantial collection, and this means that there isn’t any duplication.

I love that Kirsten goes the extra mile; from checking to see how we found the books, to liking the pics we share on Instagram, to sending the Dog book on realising where Charly’s passions really lie.

And I love the small things, like the addition of a Cave Baby colouring page for Charly and an adult colouring sheet, which is something I really enjoy doing, to make sure I don’t feel left out when my angel gets a goody bag of books. So necessary, I think I need an adult version of this service! Let’s be honest, this service is as much a gift to us mommies as it is to our kiddies.

Done!!!!! Would love to win this! Our little boy is SO in love with books. The very 1st thing I did when I found out I was pregnant was to request membership to a book club on his behalf. By the time he was born he had a tiny library and over the last year it has only grown! πŸ˜€

Liked, and shared on Facebook. I had a book themed baby shower where I requested books as gifts instead of the usual products, so this is an amazing concept.
